Veterans & 840 Project Highlights

The Westlawn Pavilion, a sprawling multi-use development, and the newly constructed Annandale Apartments near the I840 interchange in Murfreesboro brought about a surge in vehicular traffic. With 77,000+ square feet of class A development, the area was poised for increased activity as restaurants and stores also opened. The challenge was clear – to address the rising traffic demands and ensure the safety of motorists navigating the area.

Innovative Solutions

With the increased vehicle traffic, this interchange was forced to grow and improve. Stansell crews were responsible for the installation and integration of the following:

1. High Mast and Ramp Lighting: Strategically installed lighting to enhance visibility and safety for motorists navigating the interchange.

2. Traffic Signals at Each Ramp: Implemented traffic signals at every On/Off ramp along Veterans Pkwy to regulate traffic flow and enhance overall safety.

3. Fiber Optic Cable Installation: Employed advanced fiber optic technology to ensure reliable and efficient communication within the lighting and signaling system.

4. CCTV Installation at Each Ramp: Installed Closed-Circuit Television cameras at each ramp for real-time monitoring and enhanced security.

5. RSU (Road Side Units) for Future Connected Vehicle Technology (CVT): Positioned RSUs to pave the way for future integration of Connected Vehicle Technology, making the infrastructure ready for advancements in transportation technology.

Overcoming Obstacles

The journey was not without its challenges. Our team faced:

1. Terrain Issues: Adapting to the geographical characteristics of the area posed challenges, but innovative solutions were implemented to overcome them.

2. Boring: The project involved boring activities to install infrastructure beneath the surface, adding complexity to the construction process.

3. Manufacturing Issue: Overcoming supply chain challenges, including addressing manufacturing issues which required adaptability and effective project management.

4. Rock Excavation: Dealing with substantial rock formations added an extra layer of complexity, but our team navigated through it efficiently.

Project Achievements

Almost 9,000 Hours of Work with No Injuries or Near Misses: Prioritizing safety, our team achieved an impressive milestone of nearly 9,000 accident-free work hours.

Connected Vehicle Technology Readiness: By installing RSUs, the project laid the foundation for future advancements in Connected Vehicle Technology.

Enhanced Traffic Management: The implemented lighting and signaling system significantly improved traffic management in the area.

The Rutherford-Murfreesboro I840 and Veterans Pkwy Lighting project stands as a testament to our commitment to innovation, safety, and addressing the evolving needs of our communities. Through overcoming challenges and implementing cutting-edge solutions, we've illuminated not just the interchange but also the path to a safer and more connected future for Murfreesboro residents and visitors alike.
