Metro Water Services Central WWTP Facility Improvements and Electrical Optimization

In October 2020, Stansell Electric partnered with Metro Water Services and Brasfield & Gorrie on the Central WWTP Capacity Improvements and CSO Reduction project. At that time, peak plant capacity was 330 million gallons per day (mgd) and the project’s planned improvements were to expand plant capacity to over 400 mgd.

Stansell Electric played a key role in upgrading the Central plant’s medium voltage and low voltage (24V – 480V) power systems. Our scope was comprised of three (3) new 13.8kV lineups, six (6) new medium-voltage variable frequency drives, new outdoor rated 13.8 kV interrupter switches, low voltage variable frequency drives, multiple MCC lineups, upgrades to existing primary gear protection relays, plant-wide coordination studies, arc-flash system implementation, and over 1.2 million feet of medium and low voltage wire installations. Stansell Electric worked closely with Metro Water Services and NES staff to achieve multiple plant-wide shutdowns as the plant’s primary feeds were upgraded under this project scope. In addition to the electrification scope, Stansell Electric was responsible for bringing online a new DCS communication system as well as installation and commissioning of all new instrumentation in nearly every process area of the plant.

Stansell Electric’s scope improvements included, but were not limited to: Central Pump Station upgrades, new switchgear building, primary and secondary tank improvements, Intermediate Pump Station upgrades, Aeration Tank improvements, new blowers, Return Activated Sludge (RAS) system improvements, conversion of existing chlorine contact tanks to new ultraviolet disinfection facility, plant water system improvements, biosolids facility improvements, new waste gas flare, excess flow treatment unit modifications, primary ductbank installations, and civil / landscaping improvements.

At every step of this project, the Stansell Electric team has ensured the safety of its crews with zero near misses and over 85,000 non-recordable injury free working hours. Stansell Electric is very proud of its project team’s effort and their continued support of Metro Water Services throughout this endeavor.

“Stansell Electric Company has been a pleasure to work with. They operate with integrity and are clearly interested in supplying the customer with a quality finished product, both functionally and aesthetically. I would not hesitate to work with this team again.” – Jenny Slight, Brasfield & Gorrie / Project Manager
