Knoxville Travel Time Boards
Stansell Electric Company’s (SEC) East Tennessee division was excited to be working with TDOT Region 1, Installing Knoxville’s first set of travel time Dynamic Messaging Signs (DMS) into their existing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network.
SEC’s East Tennessee division currently holds an ITS maintenance contract with TDOT Region 1, and is quite familiar with its series of cameras, radar, DMS, and fiber optic networks throughout the city. The signs were strategically positioned along I-40 on both east and west sides of the city, to be seen by motorists prior to the I-40 and I-640 split.
- 2 15’x17’ aluminum panel signs and steel structures
- 4 colored DMS travel time boards
- 2 cabinets and controllers
- 1 Cisco network switch with 48 count fiber
- Accessing and splicing into to the existing TDOT 48 fiber network trunkline cable
- Updated as-built plans of the improved areas
They provide real time data using a series of radar detectors which are then displayed as minutes to their destination of travel either through, or around the city. The use of these travel time DMS signs should not only help mitigate traffic issues, and wear and tear on the main interstate, but also help the traveling public get to their destination safer and more efficiently.
