HAWK Pedestrian Crossing

HAWK Pedestrian Crossing

Successfully completed in 2023, Stansell Electric installed Nashville’s first High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) system located in the heart of historic Dickerson Pike corridor near the intersection of Sunset Drive. The HAWK system’s unique design has been proven to be safer and more effective than conventional crosswalk designs. It allows pedestrians to safely cross the road by operating in a Yellow, Red, and Flashing Red sequence to alert motorists that pedestrians need to cross the road. Unlike traffic signals, the HAWK only operates when a pedestrian pushes a button at either end of the crossing.

Prior to installation, there were many concerns how pedestrians were to safely cross a very busy Dickerson Pike road to reach a bus stop directly across from The Skyliner, a newly built inclusive, mixed income apartment community. Working with NDOT, NES, Urban Housing Solutions and The Skyliner, Stansell Electric proposed and successfully installed, without any safety incidents, the HAWK system which has alleviated this dangerous crossing area.
