CNW 104 Region 3 DMS Replacement

CNW 104 Region 3 DMS Replacement

In November 2022, Stansell Electric partnered with SDM Construction, Vulcan, TDOT Transportation Management Centers (TMC), WSP, and Daktronics, to replace thirty-nine (39) Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) that were at the end of their life cycle throughout Davidson, Williamson, and Sumner counties.

To be completed by end of August 2023, replacements using Daktronics full color matrix DMS signs and modifications to catwalks have been underway. Communication with TDOT TMC has been a crucial key in staying on schedule based on when the existing DMS signs will be replaced and when they will be accessible.

Due to the size of the new DMS signs, Stansell evaluated and developed a plan to install the signs on some existing structures. This includes modifying catwalks to the existing structure and installing new I-beams to the signs. Planning around Nashville’s downtown major events has also created a challenge as this work must be completed at night. Stansell has ensured the safety of their crews in work zones with zero near misses and Injury Free at this date of publication.

  • Replacement of 39 DMS Signs throughout Middle TN
  • Planning and Coordination with Daktronics, Subcontractors and TDOT TMC
  • Critical thinking in work zones with high traffic / downtown Nashville / accidents
  • Zero Near Misses and Injury Free
  • Key factor, communication with TDOT TMC
  • 48-hour goal to disable, replace and have online

“I would like to say that when we started replacing our DMS there were a few hiccups. Which is to be expected on a large-scale device replacement. I am pleased with the progress we have made to date. The replacements have been made overnight and are online the following morning. The group has kept me, and my staff updated on the schedule and communication has been good. Overall, the process has been better than expected. We’re looking forward to being finished with the replacements soon.” – Adam Perez, TDOT
