Broadway Bridge Knoxville
In 2019, along North Broadway downtown Knoxville, there stood an old Broadway Viaduct bridge nearly 100 years old. This bridge, no longer safe or repairable, has served as a critical gateway between North and South Knoxville. A new bridge was necessary to replace the aging structure and to incorporate multimodal traffic demands such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The bridge also needed sufficient lighting in an area that sits outside of the downtown lights as well as a new signalized intersection and upgrades at either end of the bridge for safer travel.
Stansell Electric worked alongside Bell Construction to assist in both demoing the old bridge and constructing the new. Like any project, this one presented its fair share of challenges. Geographically the location made construction difficult including bridge spans over the top of Norfolk Southern Railroad. We were also working in a busy and hectic downtown area.
Stansell Electric provided lighting and signal infrastructure with sixteen (16) bridge mounted streetlights, underpass lighting, one (1) full signal on the North end of the bridge, and upgrades to the intersection at the South end, both outfitted with new and improved pedestrian cross walks. Together with Bell Construction, TN Department of Transportation, and the City of Knoxville, we successfully built a structure that should serve the community with a safer and easier avenue of travel. The project was completed in October 2022 which opened the viaduct to vehicular traffic for the first time since November 2019.
