In 2010 Business Facilities magazine, a corporate location advisor, ranked the scenic city of Chattanooga, TN #1 for economic potential. This isn’t surprising considering the interest that major international corporations such as Volkswagen, Amazon, and Wacker Chemie have shown in the area. As a result, the city has seen above average growth.
With a population increase comes traffic and with that comes the need for efficient infrastructure management. That is why Stansell Electric Company was chosen by the Tennessee Department of Transportation for a major 22 million dollar expansion of the existing SmartWay system.
Completion of the project required extensive orchestration by Stansell that included coordination with different entities across multiple states. Further challenges included work that overlapped into other construction projects which were a part of ongoing highway improvements. In addition, the project was technically demanding, integrating pieces of unrelated systems from different agencies onto a single converged high-level communication network.

Stansell’s completion of the SmartWay improvements brought the Chattanooga area up to par with TDOT’s other metropolitan areas, and will help poise the city for future growth. In the end Stansell’s experience constructing Intelligent Transportation Systems, along with the skill of its employees, were instrumental in the success of such a large project.
